General Meeting Minutes, 10-10-03 Members of the Japanese Club, What follows is a transcript of the minutes of our first meeting. M. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1) Welcome to J-Club! The Japanese club welcomed new and returning members with a buffet catered by Matsuya of Belmont. Members socialized and enjoyed episode one of Great Teacher Onizuka in the dim ambiance of the Harper Lounge. (FYI, we will show the next episode of GTO at the second meeting.) 2) Movie Library It is our hope to start a DVD movie library this year. The plan is to: 1. Get suggestions from members 2. Buy suggested DVDs with J-Club funds 3. Give members the ability to check out DVDs from the library for free; the movies would be due back at the next meeting, allowing a rental period of at least two weeks... is that not generous? =) 4. Show movies at meetings, from time to time We may have to address the issue of region coding, because certain movies might only be available in region 2 (Japan) or 3 (Korea), instead of region 1 (North America). But for now we are in need of suggestions (see “Lists” below). 3) Upcoming Events There are a number of definite and tentative upcoming events of which members learned at the first meeting. 1. “The Sound of a Voice”: An elegant drama based on Japanese folklore is currently playing at the Court Theater (two blocks north of the main quad). (Visit http://www.courttheatre.org/home/plays/0304/voice/voice.shtml for more information.) With sufficient interest from the membership, we will attempt to secure tickets at a discounted price (the word on the street is $5). 2. Mitsuwa: We are looking to organize a trip to Japanese marketplace Mitsuwa. This Arlington Heights shopping center is made up of a supermarket, bakery, dining commons, bookstore, and who knows what else(!). Transportation involves taking the CTA (#55 -> Red Line -> Blue Line). 3. International Food Festival: IFF is a celebration of world cuisine that traditionally takes place during the last weekend of January. (I wonder if they will have pizza this year?) J-Club will be hosting an event called Iron Chef: Chicago, a competition between undergraduate chefs centered around a thematic ingredient. 4. Fundraising: We hold at least two fundraisers per year. An idea floating around currently is to go around in small groups asking for donations. 4) Lists We collected the names and email addresses of attendees who were interested in the following: 1. Signing up for this listhost 2. Discounted group tickets to “The Sound of a Voice” 3. Trip to Mitsuwa We also collected movie suggestions (title, director and/or genre, if known). (Even if you did not get a chance, you can *still* express your interest or suggest movies--simply email vcaintic@uchicago.edu.) (End of Minutes.)
